Call of Duty: Black Ops III- Beta Launch Party

The Call of Duty: Black Ops III BETA has recently been released, and to celebrate, Activision threw a BETA live stream party in Shoreditch. So, we headed to London after a hard day's graft at GAME HQ to attend the event, get a hands-on of the BETA and watch a handful of celebrities and YouTubers take eachother on in some head-to-heads.
The event was packed when we arrived - it was clear that Activision's Call of Duty Franchise is still as popular as ever. Hosting the event was YouTube star (and Call of Duty aficionado) Ali-A, as well as YouTube personalities The Sidemen. Arsenal's Héctor Bellerín, Crystal Palace's Patrick Bamford, and the Saracens Rugby lads also took the stage to try their hand at the BETA and proved they can hold their own on Call of Duty.
Mobility
The first mode that was played during the Live Stream was Hardpoint, with the YouTubers playing online against unsuspecting members of the public. The first thing that hit me was how fast-paced Black Ops III's multiplayer is. Mobility is once again paramount. In Advanced Warfare the EXO Suit provided players with unique ways to move around the map and engage enemies, which gave a whole new dynamic to the way Call of Duty is played. Black Ops III no longer has the EXO suit (you can still jump like a superhuman), instead you have the ability to wall run and fire your weapon whilst doing it, which builds on the dynamic gameplay the series is known for.
The Maps
Each map has been carefully crafted to take into account the new wall-running feature. There are often locations that you can make your way to by using this new ability, but they tend to come with some risk - if you badly time your jump, you'll end up falling to your doom…fairly obvious, though, right? Objective style game modes such as Domination or Hardpoint become more tactical than ever before; you can quite easily opt for a riskier attack by using the environment to your advantage, taking a shortcut to the objective in an attempt to flank the opposing team. It creates another dimension to Black Ops III's multiplayer and means that you'll constantly be on guard (and shaking with fear) thinking up inventive ways to attack or even flee from your enemy.
Specialist Classes
Another new feature in Call of Duty: Black Ops III is specialist classes, instead of just dropping in the game as a random player, you select a unique class that offers new abilities that change the way you'll look at Multiplayer in Call of Duty. Each class is customisable and gives you the chance to tailor your character to your own playing style. Four of these specialist classes will be available to play straight away, but another four will be unlocked as you play with another classified specialist class becoming available in the full game.
The Specialist class feature really is the bread and butter when it comes to Black Ops III's Multiplayer; it keeps the gameplay fresh and provides a completely different experience to that of previous Call of Duty games. The Classes work similarly to ‘Supers' in Destiny, giving you a unique skill that you can activate whenever your ability meter is recharged, meaning you end up tackling encounters from different angles. Each Specialist has two abilities to choose from; one is a weapon-based skill, and the other is a more tactically-driven ability. For example, the Outrider has a compound bow that fires explosive ‘one-shot-kills' arrows or a combat focus ability that reveals enemies through walls.
The Game Modes
Black Ops III's game modes haven't really changed that much from previous iterations of the series, but you'll find yourself playing them differently. The new movement features give you more chances to experiment with how you tackle objectives or take down enemies, and the new Specialist mechanic changes the way you'll approach each game mode.
Certain abilities can be useful in specific game modes and you may prefer to stick with different Specialist classes depending on what kind of match you're playing. For example, ‘Ruin' has two abilities that can be utilised best in objective style game modes. The first ability is called ‘Overdrive', which gives you a burst of speed allowing you to evade enemies or dash to an objective. His weapon ability is called ‘Gravity Spikes', works as a sort of ground ‘n' pound, and if used at the right time, can eliminate a cluster of your opponents should they happen to gather in the same spot - this is particularly useful when defending an objective.
Final Thoughts
During my brief hands-on with Black Ops III (And the play time I had this weekend) it's clear that this instalment is a game-changer, altering the way we view multiplayer in Call of Duty. The Specialist feature - at first - doesn't seem like a huge change, but it is in fact one of the most appealing additions. It adds far more depth to the way you play the game, and you'll engage enemies differently. It also allows for a lot more freedom to experiment and tailor your character to your playing style.
